![]() Methods for material classification and structural design are presented. This paper deals with the structural design of pavements that incorporate bitumen stabilized layers (emulsion and foamed bitumen). The potential use of this system is demonstrated by presenting and discussing some of the performance trends observed in the data. The paper describes the framework for data collection and documentation and introduces the internet-based Pavement Performance Information System (PPIS). The PPIS also provides road owners with more certainty regarding the suitability and reliability of a proposed design.Through internet access to the PPIS, practitioners would be able to test planned designs against the information in the performance database. With the performance information system in place, key trends observed in the performance data can be used to validate the basic behaviour models developed as part of the updated design method. The objectives of developing a PPIS are summarized below. The types of pavements represented are: full-depth granular pavements, granular base with cemented subbase pavements, cemented base pavements, asphalt base pavements, and bitumen stabilised pavements. LTPP sections represent about 75 percent of the total, while the other 25 percent are HVS test sections. A total of 61 LTPP and HVS pavement sections were selected for performance documentation and inclusion in the PPIS database. The study involved the collection of long-term pavement performance data for different South African flexible pavement types and development of a system to make this information. The development of a Pavement Performance Information System (PPIS) forms part of the Revision of the South African Pavement Design Method (SAPDM) initiated and funded by the South African Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL). This indispensable book provides everything in one volume: BREADTH - from knowledge-based systems to computational intelligence DEPTH - from introductory concepts to advanced specialist techniques SCOPE - from principles to practicalities. ![]() Whether you are building intelligent systems or you simply want to know more about them, Intelligent Systems for Engineers and Scientists provides you with a detailed, up-to-date, and practical guide to solving real problems in science and engineering. The author describes each technique at the level of detail required to develop intelligent systems for real applications. Clear and concise, the book shows the issues encountered in the development of applied systems and describes a wide range of intelligent systems techniques. ![]() The title change to Intelligent Systems for Engineers and Scientists reflects its broader scope, incorporating knowledge-based systems, computational intelligence, and their hybrids. This updated version of the best-selling Knowledge-Based Systems for Engineers and Scientists (CRC Press, 1993) embraces both the explicit knowledge-based models retained from the first edition and the implicit numerical models represented by neural networks and optimization algorithms. The procedure is used to develop guidelines for the test frequency requirements for deflection bowl parameters, the measurement of which is internationally used for the structural evaluation of pavements. A statistical procedure is presented which can be used to determine the minimum number of tests required to establish pavement characteristics at a certain level of confidence. This paper investigates the requirements of the evaluation of pavements as a basis to establish guidelines for test frequencies. The cost of the information is a function of the required test frequency. These tests differ in terms of the type of information that is measured as well as the cost of obtaining the information. several tests are available for use from which pavement characteristics can be obtained. ![]() Fundamental to the effective management of roads in a network or project level study is the evaluation of the functional as well as the structural condition of the road through the testing of the road. Pavement management is divided into network and project level studies. ![]()

Thanks so much for talking about the different paving materials that include bitumen. My sister wants to renovate her backyard and pave some pathways and a patio. We've been looking into finding some professionals she can work with to ensure the materials and things will last in the outdoors.
